  • Research: Participants Needed

Post-9/11 Army Combat Veterans with a combat-related TBI needed for a two-part research study to understand the experiences of having a combat-related TBI, Army culture, and the meaning of the Purple Heart Award.

This study is being conducted by Jayna Moceri Brooks, RN, MN, PhD Candidate and has received full IRB approval through Duquesne University (Protocol #2021/07/25).  This study is not endorsed by the DoD or VA.  Your participation, name, and all information provided will be kept strictly confidential!

You are eligible to participate in both parts of the study if you:
  • Served or are currently serving in the U.S. Army
  • Were deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism (e.g., OIF, OEF, and more) as an Army service member
  • Have a suspected (self-diagnosed) or diagnosed TBI/concussion from enemy fire (indirectly or directly)
  • You are NOT required to have the Purple Heart Award to participate (I would like to hear from service members with and without the award)

You can choose to participate in one or both parts of the study:
Part A is an interview study with Jayna Moceri Brooks via Zoom and takes about one hour. During the interview, you will answer questions related to military culture, the Purple Heart Award, and your experiences while deployed.

Part B is an anonymous survey study where you will answer questions about your deployment and your experiences surrounding your injury/injuries. The survey takes approx.15 mins and your answers will remain anonymous, even to the researchers. The survey link can be e-mailed or texted to your mobile device.

Please email Jayna (brooksj9@duq.edu) or fill out the contact form on this webpage to learn more about the study, schedule an interview, or request the anonymous survey link.  Thank you!
